With the impending news of Weston McKennie, heading to Leeds United from Juventus. It seems as if Leeds United is attempting to do something that has never been done before. If this move does officially go through then Jesse Marsch, and Leeds United will become the first team in the English Premier League, to attempt to win or qualify for a European spot with a young core of Americans on the roster. 

When Jesse Marsch took over the Leeds United job, he brought Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams with him to play in his starting 11. Now he will look to put another solid piece in his midfield and make up 66% of the MMA midfield that United States fans have become so accustomed to with the addition of Weston McKennie next to Tyler Adams.

If this works and Leeds survives relegation or even manages to climb the ladder and finish in a higher spot then it could potentially further change the outlook of American soccer to the rest of the world. However, if Leeds United fails and they end up being relegated then the outlook of American soccer will be set back at least another decade, if not more. Which makes this move even more important with the 2026 fast approaching and the 2026 World Cup being played on North American soil. 

Leeds currently sits at fifteenth in the English Premier League table through their first nineteen games of the 2022-23 campaign. They have a total of 18 points in those nineteen games and they are only a single point clear of the relegation zone with half of the season remaining. They had a rather quick exit in the EFL cup as they were knocked out in the third round by fellow Premier League team, Wolves. However, they are still alive in the FA cup as they won their fourth round game today and now have advanced to the fifth round. 

There’s plenty of season left, but that one cloud will hang over the team and more importantly Marsch. As the pressure will always be there as they look to avoid relegation with three young Americans on the roster. It will certainly be interesting to see how these final 19 games in the preceding rounds of the FA cup turn out for Leeds but one thing is for certain a lot of American eyes will be looking towards this team down the stretch.
