Juventus has always been the crown jewel of Italian football, but over the last several years, the team, and the company as a whole has severely declined both in performance and importance to the sport, the league, and the country.
It has never been more obvious than following recent events, they were deducted fifteen points and went all the way down to the bottom half of the table. With their champions league dreams already basically dashed, they suffered their second defeat of the season to relegation side Monza. This time they were embarrassed on their own home pitch 2-0 and now their future looks bleaker than ever.
Coming into the second month of the year they currently sit at 13th in the Italian Serie A standings through their first 20 games of the season. They have given up more goals in their last three league games than they had in their previous seventeen games on the season.
The one silver lining left in the season for them is the Coppa Italia quarter finals and the UEFA Europa League. However, with the way they have been looking as of late, it may not be long before they are bounced out of those competitions like they were in the UEFA Champions League group stage late last year.
The club has been rocked by this scandal and if it doesn’t get turned around quickly they may be looking for a new manager at the end of the season as well. As the Italian giants have been passed up by clubs like Inter Milan, Milan, and Napoli. At the moment their recent run of dominance feels more like it happened several decades ago and not just four short years ago.
The month of February is pretty cut and dry for them, as well as packed, as they will be playing in the knockout playoffs of the Europa League and in Coppa Italia as well. However, there will be plenty of opportunities for the Old Lady to turn it around and they will get the benefit of being at home several times throughout the month.
They also have four very important and must win domestic games coming up over the next four weeks. They will be facing the likes of Fiorentina and rivals Torino in the Derby della Mole at home. As well as potential relegation sides Spezia and Salernitana.
Regardless of where they finish in the league this season, their main focus will be on the Europa League. If they fail to win the competition, next season will be the first time that they won’t be playing Champions League football in a long time and it could lead to a mass exodus in Turin for Juventus.
So only time will tell if the “Old Lady of Italian Football” is truly dead, but the facts are certain, at the moment, they are hooked to a ventilator and on life support. It remains to be seen if progress will be made this season, but don’t quite start the funeral processions yet. However, nobody would blame you for at least picking out the casket and making the arrangements.
