Rumors have emerged that Roma is potentially interested in Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie. According to several sources, Roma boss José Mourinho wants a midfielder that can play box to box which would perfectly suit McKennie’s style. It is becoming more and more likely that Weston McKennie is going to look to move from Juventus during the summer’s upcoming transfer window, and while all signs are pointing towards a move to the Premier League, when a legendary coach like Mourinho comes calling you at least have to listen to the offer being presented. 

He would fit in well at Roma, as he is capable of playing several different positions on the field. As previously mentioned, he is a very solid box to box midfielder, and the type of guy that Jose Mourinho is looking for to help improve a Roma side that made it to the finals of European competition last season. 

It has been reported that Roma has reached out to Juventus within the last 24 hours to gauge a potential transfer move for Weston McKennie and it awaits to be seen if any further progress will be made for a deal. There is also growing speculation that Roma could attempt to get a loan deal for McKennie as well, which would emulate his loan deal with Leeds last season.

McKennie is coming off a less than successful loan spell with Leeds United last season, where he went to England, thinking it was joining up with American coach Jesse Marsch, and fellow Americans, Brenden Aaronson, and Tyler Adams. However, Jesse Marsch was fired almost as soon as Weston McKennie arrived at Elland Road. 

What followed was a rough second half of the season that saw Leeds United get relegated to the English Championship. A lot of abuse and blame was pointed in the direction of Weston McKennie, not only because of his lackluster performances at times, but also thanks in part to some of his “friends” running around social media causing issues for the star American midfielder. 

McKennie was one of the first young Americans to really break out in Europe within this generation that we are currently seeing play on the field. He has quickly risen up the ranks as one of the best players on the roster, and its production and star power certainly cannot be denied. He came to fame during his time with Bundesliga club Schalke 04 in 2017 and spent four years in Germany before moving to Turin. 

In 70 appearances for the Italian giant Juventus, he netted nine goals and during his short stint in England McKennie made 19 appearances, but was unable to grab a goal for himself. He averages one goal every four games in international play as he has made 44 caps for the United States Men’s National Team and scored 11 goals in that span. The next time he suits up for the United States will be for COPA America and CONCACAF Nations League qualifiers as the United States looks to build on their progress after winning their second consecutive nations league. 

Regardless of where Weston McKennie ends up, he is certainly going to be a heavily featured piece in the starting 11 next season, and he will be looking to improve upon his less than stellar performance last season with a new club in a new league, or remain in Italy, with either Roma, or even potentially a return to Juventus.
