Barrels quarterback Shea Spencer threw for a whopping seven touchdowns and 281 yards in his AF1 debut on Sunday night, along with rushing for two more as Kentucky took down the Oceanside Bombers 80-42.
“He came in and did exactly what we were looking for at the quarterback position,” Barrels head coach Cedric Walker said of Spencer. “He understands what needs to be done.”
Wide receiver Darius Prince was a major contributor to Kentucky’s offensive output, catching four of Spencer’s seven touchdown passes for 124 receiving yards overall, including a 45-yard score early in the second quarter which gave the Barrels a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
Spencer came into the year as the backup to Dalton Oliver, but was called into action this week as Oliver was out of the lineup due to a family emergency. Also getting on the board for the Barrels were wide receivers Jaylin Marshall, Dezmon Epps and Shiloh Flanagan, who each put up a touchdown on the evening.
The night started off with a bang as Barrels returner Joe Powell nearly ran back the opening kickoff, instead setting up a one-yard touchdown run on the next play. After a relatively defense-dominated first quarter which saw Kentucky hold onto a 12-8 lead, the offense exploded in the second quarter as the Barrels put up 31 points. After the long touchdown connection from Spencer to Prince, the veteran receiver scored his own two-point conversion on a fake extra point try, securing the octopus and setting the tone for the rest of the half.
“I feel like once we got the first completion and started rolling, that was it,” Spencer said. “Everybody was just doing their one-eighth in this league and that’s what it takes.”
On their next possession, the Bombers were forced to settle for a long field goal try, but defensive lineman Joe Golden knocked the kick down and into the end zone for a safety. Kentucky quickly made their way downfield again, with Spencer punching it in from two yards out.
With a minute left in the first half, the Bombers were able to trim the Barrels’ lead to 14 on a 26-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Rudy Johnson to receiver Tyler Kennedy. However, after a nice kick return by Epps set Kentucky up with solid field position, he would fittingly be the one to get into the end zone, hauling in a 30-yard TD pass to put the Barrels ahead 43-22 at the half.
Oceanside somewhat recovered to hold even with the Barrels in the third and keep it a three-possession game, but were no match for Kentucky in the final frame as they pulled away for good thanks to a quartet of fourth-quarter touchdowns. Two of the late scores came via the Spencer to Prince connection, though the team also tacked on a defensive score with lineman Geemontae Peck forcing a fumble which was picked up by linebacker Siaosi Finau.
In addition to the strong passing game, exceptional play by the Barrels special teams unit helped the team take control, including a successful surprise onside kick in the second quarter and an exciting missed field goal return touchdown from Powell. On the return, Powell zig-zagged across the field multiple times, evading a bevy of Bomber tacklers before finding a lane into the end zone. Kicker Aaron Baum also added the first deuce in franchise history early in the fourth quarter.
Walker credited the leadership of special teams coordinator Anthony Hoke in the victory.
“It goes back to Coach Hoke,” Walker said. “He’s our defensive line guy and our special teams guy, he’s putting the guys in the right place.”
While Spencer and the Barrels took the win, Johnson had a solid performance at quarterback for the San Diego-area team with four touchdowns and 212 yards passing. Bombers wide receiver Jaylon Tucker claimed three touchdown catches and 84 receiving yards as fellow wideout Tajae Brooks just reached triple digits with exactly 100 receiving yards on the night.
Kentucky defensive backs Mike Lee and Jalen Phelps led the way in tackles with five apiece, with Flanagan also claiming an interception to go along with his touchdown reception. Peck and fellow defensive lineman Ezekiel Rose were also each credited with a sack.
Now holding a 2-0 record, the Barrels head into their bye week on a high note before completing their season-opening homestand against the Nashville Kats on May 3rd.
