The Los Angeles Lakers survived a thrilling playoff round against the Houston Rockets. A brilliant chance to finish the knockout round on matchday four was wasted. Consecutive defeats and a bunch of poor performances made things critical for the next round.
Lakers domination:
The Los Angeles Lakers dominated from the start of the playoffs. They won three consecutive games, and it felt like they were going to be the first side to qualify. But a weak performance on the fourth matchday felt really odd. Poor performances from Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, and Luke Kennard were costly, as they failed to make any crucial impact despite being on the court for 30 minutes. DeAndre Ayton and LeBron James were decent, contributing 19 points, including assists.
Matchday five was also a disaster for the Lakers, where they fell short by just six points. This time, they performed a bit better, with LeBron leading from the front and contributing 32 points, including assists. Once again, Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, and Luke Kennard failed to make any impact. Luke was particularly off, scoring only three points, including assists, despite being on the court for 31 minutes. A crucial contribution from Austin Reaves was key, as he added 28 points, including assists.
In the sixth game, the Lakers just survived. They grabbed a win, but the game wasn’t good enough. They won by 20 points, which was a big margin, but the performance was still not convincing. LeBron again starred with a 36-point contribution, while this time, Rui was also solid with 23. The concern was that only three players contributed in double figures.
Houston Rockets revival:
The Houston Rockets were not in good shape, managing just 20 points combined in the first three games. They gave a tough fight but failed to finish in those games. They had almost lost their chances of reaching the next round despite having games in hand. However, in the next two games, they performed well and won back-to-back games by 19 and 6 points. It was all square, with hope that if they could win the sixth matchday, there would be a chance to fight for a spot.
But a poor performance in the sixth game was the last nail in the coffin. Jabari Smith Jr. failed in a vital game, scoring just 12 points, including assists, despite being on the court for 42 minutes. Even the home ground did not benefit them.
Next round:
The stage is set, and the Los Angeles Lakers are going to face the Oklahoma City Thunder. On the other side, the San Antonio Spurs will face the Minnesota Timberwolves. Meanwhile, teams like the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic, and Detroit Pistons are still in the race for the semifinals.
