Kentucky Barrels wide receiver Darius Prince posted a career-high 13 catches with 113 yards on Saturday night, but the team’s first road contest in franchise history still ended in defeat at the hands of the defending champion Albany Firebirds 55-37.

Both teams entered the night in contention for undefeated seasons, but the Firebirds’ successful defense of their home turf leaves them as the only AF1 team with an unblemished record.

Albany established themselves early on in the game, going on a run of 17 unanswered points before the Barrels could get on the board. This included a 35-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Sam Castronova to receiver Darien Townsend, a duo which would also connect for the longest touchdown of the evening with a 39-yarder early in the fourth quarter.

In the second quarter, though, the Barrels began to mount a comeback with quarterback Shea Spencer finding the veteran Prince in the end zone twice, first on a 26-yard score and later on a short pass to cut the lead to 24-14 at halftime. However, their momentum came to a screeching halt once the second half began as Albany’s Lorenzo Jones Jr. collected an errant ball off the net on the opening kickoff and ran it in to restore the three-possession advantage. The Firebirds were able to keep the game out of reach from there, eventually taking a 5-0 record thus far.

The Barrels had their biggest offensive highlight in the third quarter, as Spencer hit wide receiver Shiloh Flanagan on a quick pass in the flat. Showing off his speed, Flanagan outran the trailing linebacker before threading the needle between a pair of Firebird defensive backs, making his way into the end zone for the first of three occasions on the night.

Castronova picked up the victory with three touchdown passes and 252 passing yards with no interceptions, while Spencer amassed 291 passing yards and five touchdowns, but also gave up three picks. Two of those interceptions were attributed to defensive back Markus Smith, while Jones Jr. also had an INT to go along with his second half-opening touchdown.

In addition to the aforementioned 113-yard, two-touchdown performance by Prince, Flanagan also hauled in three touchdowns for 61 yards. Matching that total, wide receiver Jeremiah Taylor made his AF1 debut with 61 receiving yards as well. As for Albany, Townsend emerged as the standout receiver with 127 yards and a pair of impressive touchdown receptions, with teammate Duane Brown not far behind with 94 receiving yards and a touchdown. Castronova also commanded the running game with three TDs and 32 yards on the ground.

Firebirds linebacker Drew Singleton made a total of 11 tackles, with Jones Jr. and Smith adding seven more apiece. Defensive back Joe Powell led the Barrels defense with eight tackles as lineman Ezekiel Rose captured two sacks. Also of note, Albany kicker Will Caviness scored two deuces on kickoffs along with making a 47-yard field goal early on.
