Bringing out a new starting quarterback for the third time before the halfway mark of the regular season, the Barrels struck gold again as Darryl Overstreet Jr. delivered with seven touchdown passes for 269 yards, to go along with a pair of touchdowns on the ground in Kentucky’s 55-37 win over the Beaumont Renegades on Sunday afternoon.
The decisive victory enables the Barrels to bounce back from their only loss of the season last week against the Albany Firebirds, while maintaining their undefeated record in home games this season.
While the Renegades captured the opening touchdown of the contest, the Barrels got to work in the second quarter, starting with a huge safety as defensive lineman Sidney Houston Jr. brought down Beaumont quarterback Andrew McBride in the end zone. It didn’t take Kentucky long at all to capitalize on the extra possession, with the first and only play of the drive seeing Overstreet connect with a wide open Jalin Marshall, who did the rest for a 40-yard touchdown completion.
Now in the driver’s seat with a 22-7 lead, Kentucky would keep the gas pedal down on their next possession as offensive lineman Melvin Hollins bulldozed his way into the end zone from the one-yard line for what would be the team’s biggest lead of the day. However, Hollins wouldn’t be the only Barrels O-lineman to show off their athleticism with the ball in their hands. After Beaumont responded with a touchdown, Kentucky’s Jamezz Kimbrough caught an Overstreet pass just past the line of scrimmage, but had plenty of empty field ahead of him. In arguably the most exciting score of the afternoon, Kimbrough stiff-armed a Renegade defender, throwing them into the path of the only other defender in the area and clearing a lane for the 28-yard touchdown to restore a 36-14 advantage.
The Renegades started to mount a comeback in the third quarter, doubling up on an end-of-half field goal with a short touchdown pass from McBride to wide receiver Zuri Davis for his third of four TD grabs on the day to make it a two-possession game. However, the Barrels defense would hold pat for the rest of the second half, only giving up one more touchdown as the offense held up their end as well, improving to a 4-1 record.
Overstreet’s dominant performance also came in his AF1 debut, taking the win over McBride who ended up with a respectable five touchdowns and 171 passing yards, as both QBs threw a pair of interceptions. Marshall had his third 100-yard receiving game of the season, good for 104 yards with two touchdown catches in the process. Fellow veteran receiver Darius Prince also nabbed a pair of touchdowns with 48 yards, though both missed time in the second half due to injury.
Defensive back Joe Powell led the Kentucky defense with seven tackles in addition to an interception and a third-quarter touchdown catch, while Jalen Phelps added an interception and a forced fumble to go along with his four tackles. Defensive back Esaias Gandy picked up nine tackles and an interception for Beaumont, with Jerrime Neal also contributing an interception and five tackles in the loss.
Also of note, a wrinkle in the AF1 rulebook allows teams to go for a two-point drop kick after touchdowns rather than a typical point after try, which the Barrels took advantage of with new kicker Henry Nell. After a rough start on extra points, Nell drilled his next two drop kicks for the first such score in franchise history.
