Despite a strong showing by wide receiver Darius Prince, the Kentucky Barrels were unable to keep up with the Minnesota Monsters, who dealt the team a shocking 69-32 loss in Duluth on Saturday night.

The loss drops the Barrels to a 5-2 record in the AF1 standings, with the Monsters making the jump to 4-2 as both teams remain in good shape to reach the playoffs.

Minnesota staked their claim as a championship contender in the first quarter, scoring 25 unanswered points to open the contest. LeDarian McAllister earned the first of several touchdown passes from quarterback Ja’Vonte Johnson, which was followed by a deuce from kicker Aedan Johnson on the ensuing kickoff for a 9-0 lead. However, the game really began to go awry for the Barrels on the next possession, which saw them give up a safety as quarterback Darryl Overstreet Jr. was brought down by linebacker Chei Hill. This gave the ball right back to the Monsters, who only needed one play to take advantage as Johnson found wide receiver Phoenix Sproles on a 35-yard bomb to the end zone.

The Kentucky offense wouldn’t even be able to get back onto the field to respond, as the next kickoff bounced off the upright and into the waiting arms of Dontorian Best for a turnover. With the momentum firmly on their side, Minnesota nabbed yet another touchdown soon after as Johnson connected with offensive lineman Gunner Hurlburt from four yards out. The Barrels were able to get on the board on the final play of the quarter to avoid an opening frame shutout, but unfortunately for the team, a comeback was not in the cards.

The Monsters maintained their three-possession advantage at 35-12 going into halftime and continued to build onto the lead from there, eventually winning it 69-32. Johnson put together a dominant performance for the Monsters, scoring eight touchdowns and 258 yards through the air, as Sproles ended the night with 96 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. McAllister was also a favorite target, collecting three touchdowns and 56 yards.

For Kentucky, Overstreet threw for 183 yards and four touchdowns, albeit with a pair of interceptions on the evening. Prince was the leading Barrels receiver after also getting a hat trick of TDs and 84 yards on five catches. Defensively, Joe Powell picked up seven tackles for the Barrels, as Best led the Minnesota defense with three tackles and a forced fumble to go along with his early kickoff recovery.
