After allowing a mere two points in the first half against the Oregon Lightning, the Kentucky Barrels defense continued to do their job the rest of the way as the team grabbed a convincing 40-17 road win on Sunday night.

The victory further solidifies the Barrels’ grasp on a playoff spot with a 6-2 record in the AF1 standings, while the Lightning are in a fight to stay out of last place in the league as they drop to 1-7.

Oregon took their only lead of the contest on the opening kickoff, with kicker Ammon Lakip splitting the uprights for a deuce, but Kentucky didn’t need much time to respond as quarterback Darryl Overstreet Jr. found wide receiver Shiloh Flanagan for a 24-yard touchdown once their possession got going. Overstreet captured one of his three rushing touchdowns before the end of the first quarter to give the Barrels a two-possession lead, followed by an additional touchdown run from wide receiver Dezmon Epps after defensive lineman Geemontae Peck fell on a fumbled Oregon handoff.

Both defenses stood their ground for the rest of the half as the Barrels settled for a 19-2 halftime lead, but the team would end up putting the game away for good in the third quarter on another incredible TD pass from Overstreet to Flanagan, this time on a strike from 35 yards out to leap ahead by three possessions. Kentucky would maintain that gap through the final frame, eventually securing it 40-17.

Overstreet picked up 246 passing yards with Flanagan being his top target, catching both of Overstreet’s touchdown passes and getting 113 yards on seven receptions.

Lightning quarterback Dalton Cole also had a pair of touchdown passes with 133 yards through the air, as wide receiver Maurice Ashley collected both touchdowns and added 76 receiving yards on nine grabs.

On the defensive side of the ball, new acquisition Damonte McCurdy led the Barrels with 10 tackles, while defensive lineman Ezekiel Rose captured two sacks. Oregon was led in tackles by defensive back Nick Brassel with six.
